ARE YOUR TYRES LEGAL.

The legal minimum tread depth for car and similar tyres in the United Kingdom is 1.6 mm throughout a continuous band comprising the central three quarters of the breadth of the tread and round the entire circumference of the tyre. If you are ever worried that the tread depth of any of your tyres does not fulfil the legal criteria, then pop in for a free, no obligation tyre check. We could save you a hefty fine and penalty points.

The condition of both the tread area and the side wall of your tyres are critical for road safety. Age can affect the condition of your tyres, as can incorrect tyre pressures. You should check the condition and pressure of your tyres on a regular basis. Oil, fuel or paint can have a harmful effect on the rubber compound used in tyres. Oil can make the tread rubber swell, reducing the pattern grooves and affecting adhesion. Immediate removal with detergent and plenty of water is recommended.

The correct tyre pressures are critical for optimum braking performance, maximum grip and in prolonging the life of your tyres. Check your vehicle handbook or contact A and S Tyre Services to find out the correct tyre pressures for your car. Incorrect tyre pressures will cause shorter tyre life through more rapid wear. Low tyre pressures will be detrimental to fuel consumption and could wear your tyres unevenly. High tyre pressures reduce the contact patch with the road and therefore sacrifice road grip.

For your tyre size, see the side wall of your tyre, it could read:- 205 / 55 ZR 17. All tyres will have their size in this fashion, so when phoning for quotes, all of this information will be required in order to receive an accurate estimate for replacement cost, together with the make required. Ensure that the tyre and wheel combination is fitted with the appropriate valve.

The numbers and letters refer to the following:-

205 – width of the tyre in mm.

55 = the ratio or profile of the tyre (side wall height is 40% of the width)

17 – the rim diameter in inches.

Z – the speed rating or maximum speed of the tyre.

R – the tyre has a radial construction
